“Sod the wine, I want to suck on the writing. This man White is an instinctive writer, bloody rare to find one who actually pulls it off, as in still gets a meaning across with concision. Sharp arbitrage of speed and risk, closest thing I can think of to Cicero’s ‘motus continuum animi.’

Probably takes a drink or two to connect like that: he literally paints his senses on the page.”

CELEBRATING MAX SCHUBERT'S 99th

The sweetest, most memorable evening in a long time: to celebrate the 99th birthday of the late Max Schubert (1915-1994), his family gave a dinner for a few lucky guests. Di Davidson, left, Brenton Schubert, Annabelle Collett, Sandie Coff (like Brenton, a child of Thelma and Max) with husband Gary Coff, the author, Loren Coff, Thelma Schubert and Anne-Marie Shin.  There was lots of rolling anecdote and laughter during Sandie's delicious repast, and some truly beautiful wines.  My highlights? 1983 Grange (impossible fresh fruit and finesse from a terrible vintage of bushfire and flood), the hyper-elegant Government House Special Blend Shiraz/Cabernet sauvignon, and Sandie's port, from the barrel Max laid down for her upon her birth. Max woulda loved it all ... Thellie certainly did ... It was an honour to share such fellowship ... photos Milton Wordley

You have William Burroughs' 100th. and Max Schubert's 99th. within a few inches of each other on the internet. Does this bode well for the future?
