“Sod the wine, I want to suck on the writing. This man White is an instinctive writer, bloody rare to find one who actually pulls it off, as in still gets a meaning across with concision. Sharp arbitrage of speed and risk, closest thing I can think of to Cicero’s ‘motus continuum animi.’

Probably takes a drink or two to connect like that: he literally paints his senses on the page.”

ENTOMOLOGY: BUGGER BUG GO BEETLE

From a tiny 2007 tasting notebook: musta bin a dull tasting ... Volkswagen had released the Bugatti Veyron (below). Bugger the Bug, petrolhead White muttered to himself, they should leave the name of a genius Italian Frenchman, stick to the German appellation and go full-bore Beetle! This Volkswagen was designed to change shape, so at extreme speed it could become assymetrical to handle adverse winds or extreme torque under ridiculous acceleration. Obviously never got round to drawing the mechanicals, did he, or they woulda built it, wouldn't they? Click here for an old Bugatti dream.
