“Sod the wine, I want to suck on the writing. This man White is an instinctive writer, bloody rare to find one who actually pulls it off, as in still gets a meaning across with concision. Sharp arbitrage of speed and risk, closest thing I can think of to Cicero’s ‘motus continuum animi.’

Probably takes a drink or two to connect like that: he literally paints his senses on the page.”

WATERFRONT - WHERE WATER MEETS LAND

DRINKSTER's grateful to  Luke Carl Thompson for permission to use his photo of Barry Mansfield about to tackle a challenge in the hills east of Perth. "That spillway hasn't seen much action for years apart from skateboarders," Thompson said. "Last time I remember the dams overflowing was well over 15 years ago."

This perfectly Australian photograph is exactly what 2014 looks like from where I stand ... and it's not just a photo I love, but it re-emerged coincidentally the same day I got my ticket to a show at another place where water meets concrete.

Curated by Annabelle Collett who lives in the Murray estuary, (that's Annabelle introducing Greg Mackie, above) it's called WATERFRONT - where water meets land.  It's a collection of diverse beautiful to beautifully nuts work from 26  gun artists, including the likes of George Popperwell, Megan O'Hara, Tony Kearney, Richard Morecroft, Antonia Chaffey, Ian de Gruchy and Timothy John.

It hangs til 23rd February at Signal Point, at the Murray River Port of Goolwa.  As I locate good images of the works, I shall put them here in place of my snaps. But these'll help you get the drift, Mon.

The Goolwa Cockle Beach near Cafe Bombora  ... the boofheads never bother to tell you that's it wet and the next landfall is Antarctica and it's White Pointers all the way ... not to take my name too lightly ... it's part of the edge of this  country, for Chrissake! Why don't they wall it to save us?

... and just in case we needed to bring this back to the hills east of Perth where for some no-doubt practical reason this cock-eyed reporter set forth [it's 2,962 km away from Annabelle's exhibition] here's how my brother's neighbourhood looked after yesterday's bushfire ... no water meeting this land ... photo Stephen White
